Re-Connecting

Over the past month I have been able to step back and spend a little time addressing things (and people) that have been somewhat neglected. My Grandma always said 'Give a busy person something to do and it always gets done'. Not always the case methinks. Give a busy person something to do and it usually gets added to an already enormous list of things to do!!
I have been having a little 'me' time of late. This has given me a chance to see old friends, chat for ages on the phone, and photograph some of my many projects (i am still ignoring the ironing). Who knew that I had knitted not one, but four Ishbels this year!! I have had a couple of hugely enjoyable and interesting woolly related road trips for inspiration and information. But, best of all, I have had time to sit and browse my huge collection of Knitting Books and Magazines. As the owner of The Knit Studio I stock a large, nay ginormous amount of Knitting, Crochet and Sewing books, this means I have unlimited access to them all. What can be better than to browse through beautiful books for inspiration with a coffee, some cake and a very large cat for company?

Ishbel knitted in DK Cotton

HitchHiker knitted in 4ply

Ishbel knitted in Lace Weight

Trial knitted in DK Cotton

Veyla knitted in Angora

Damson knitted in DK Bamboo Cotton

Just a few of this years projects which finally made to the front of the camera!!

And, not forgetting Mittens

Time to advertise for staff I think, then I can enjoy a little more 'me time'!

This Makes Me Smile

I recently posted the link to this book on a forum in Ravelry and people either loved it or hated it. What do you think?

It is just such a typically English thing to do. Did we have a Knitted American Presidential Election? No, I didn't think so. However, I have to admit on closer inspection the characters in the book are quite lovable in their own way, and I do like the corgis. I did have a mad idea to knit it for The Knit Studio but having looked at all the instructions have decided (wiselyI think) not to put myself under so much knitting pressure. I may change my mind of course, it is a Wedding after all! And talking of Royal Wedding Souvenirs - did anyone see the mug that has a photograph of the wrong Prince on it? Hilarious, how many people will realise before they buy it?

I was given another link, still Royal Wedding themed - it made my day! Enjoy!

Crochet, Cats and Chickens

It has been an interesting weekend - busy, but interesting!
A Learn to Crochet Workshop was scheduled at The Knit Studio for Sunday. As some of you know, for the past couple of years I have travelled the length and breadth of the country tutoring a wide range of knitting, crochet and sewing related subjects. So, because of this, I have a box in which I keep all my workshop samples. This means that for any given subject, I just dip into the box, check the samples, wash them if needed, block them and generally tidy them up. On Friday night I 'dipped' into the box for the crochet samples and ... horror of horrors! No sign of them! Cue a frantic search of other boxes before finally deciding I would have to quickly crochet them all again. Not easy when you consider that Saturday is a busy day at The Knit Studio with the very large and popular Knitting Group. Nevertheless I managed to do the samples I needed by early in the evening, and, by this time I had caught the crochet bug.  If some one asks me knit or crochet? I will always reply knit - but when I do get around to crocheting I remember how much I enjoy it and I wasn't quite ready to put everything away, just yet - after all, I had all my hooks, lots of odd bits of yarn and a few new books (borrowed, of course from The Knit Studio). I really like Amigurumi crochet type creatures because of their funny shapes and 'googly' eyes and because they are quick to make. By the end of Saturday night Charlie the Cat and Chloe the chicken had been born! Photos later on......

The Crochet Workshop went really well - it was a beautiful, sunny day and everyone got the hang of all the basic stitches really quickly! It was a good job I had a few 'extension tasks' up my sleeves. Not only all the basic stitches but circles, flowers and granny squares too -well done everyone!

And so to Monday, which was for me Washday Monday! You know, a warm sunny day perfect for hanging out washing - so perfect I went looking for washing! Three stripped beds later and the kitchen resembled a Chinese Laundry.

One of the many piles on the kitchen floor.

Taking advantage of the brilliant sunshine, Mittens and I spent a little time in the garden where I managed to photograph some of my recent projects.

Charlie gaurding 'his' fat ball feeder!
I nearly wrote gauarding his fat b****s
but then realised how that sounded
and I do have children reading my Blog. Hello Rellies!! :-)

Chloe, the chicken, hiding from Mittens!

Mittens ignoring Chloe.

Perhaps I will just squash it?

And - introducing Charlie the cat ....

he is kind of cute isn't he?
(Eyes and nose temporary fittings!)

I'll just ignore this creature too!

Some finished knitting projects enjoyed the sunshine too.
Springtime HitchHiker

Hitch Hiker again, not my usual colours, but a great Springtime Scarf.

New Knitters First Project - designed for last weeks' Learn to Knit Workshop at Create in Ilkley.
Knitted in Nidd yarn from their fantastic Ba T'at yarn range
- which is also available exclusively at The Knit Studio!

and finally - received this from a pal recently - it made me smile :-)

A Glimpse of My Week

Well, what a busy week we are having. It is so good to have mum and dad here and to spend some time with them. It has been a bit hectic here, and I sometimes think life in Newcastle may be a bit too busy for them!
However, here are a few photos of what has been happening in the last week.

Saturday Morning Knitting Group @ The Knit Studio 22nd January.

Mum's Christmas Present Scarf

Coffee and Cake at Debenhams

Cute card received from a dear friend

New yarn arrives at The Knit Studio

100% Silk                                                       100% Linen

'Magic' Range of superwash 4ply

And, there has actually been some knitting going on!
I have been knitting this all week in the evenings, and I love it!

I also 'christened' my Christmas present mug! How cool is this?
There seems to be a bit of colour co-ordination going on, doesn't there? It is quite unintentional!

And finally, a word about our belated christmas Dinner. Even the cats are beginning to wonder - Mittens is offering himself up to be the table centre piece! Look how worried Pebbles looks - it's a kind of 'Ooo you are going to get into such trouble!' look, isn't it?
The poor turkey has been squashed in the freezer since December, and today finally he will be revealed! You know what it's like in a busy household - you think you have a day sorted when everyone is free - then, something unexpected but important crops up. Today was to be our Christmas day - but is now postponed til tomorrow evening. As I type, Sarah is heading towards Stockport, in Cheshire to play in a Basketball match and will not get home until 9.00pm this evening. (Good luck Sarah).
This does mean that now, mum and I are free to partake in a little retail therapy - Royal Quays beckons..... Enjoy the rest of your weekend - and thanks for all your lovely comments!

Workshops 2011

Sewing!

Well, that was a long silence! Must have been being in the close proximity of so many Firemen!
Anyway, apart from trying to recover from illness, getting Sarah ready for return to school, actually reducing my ironing pile from two to only one basket!! The only other, but very significant thing I have managed to complete over the past week is my 2011 Workshop Programme for The Knit Studio - go take a peek, there may be something to interest you!
I have some brand new sewing machines on the way - Heike is returning for Continental Knitting - Hooray! ..... and Emma King and Frederica Patmore - both Rowan Tutors and Designers, are coming to visit! It is all very exciting!

Crochet!

Knitting!

All I need to do now is - add them to the Ravelry Group, print the booklets, do my Newsletter, finish that ironing!!!

So, as you can see, I have been knitting up a storm in amongst the usual things one does at this time of year.

New Blocking Device

I present - Pebbles - a new blocking device for knitters! Pebbles has many advantages - he is warm and heavy - does not move easily - stays in place all night and best of all - he Purrs!!!!

Blackfriars Bunnies

When the ladies from the Craft Cruises USA came to visit, we made up some goody bags as little souvenir gifts for everyone. Included in the bag was a Mini Skein of British Breeds Yarn and I had a little bit left over. So, not liking to waste anything, my next question was what could I knit with it? A friend from Knitting Group recommended Bunny Nuggets - a free pattern on Ravelry. Find it Here.
After knitting the first one, he did what Rabbits do - multiplied!
Here is the first batch -

The brightly coloured one was knitted by Sarah, the red and turquoise ones knitted by Donna and embellished by her clever husband Andy! I have a feeling there will be more!

Previously Last Week

I forgot to mention that, earlier last week we had visitors to stay. Friends of Sarah, Holly and Emma live in Nottingham now and we do not get to see them all that much. However, Holly and Sarah are enjoying a pen friendship (running alongside the usual text messages and facebooking) that has impressed even me (aka Campaigner for the Continuation and Preservation of the Handwritten Letter or Card).
They arrived on Monday, and with Sarah's help this is what we were doing on Monday night.

Sarah and Holly aare knitting beaded bracelets, and Emma (on the left) is doing her first bit of real knitting. Well done girls!
On Tuesday we went to Wallington Hall, unfortunately we chose the only time the Hall is closed to the public! but we still enjoyed the grounds, play area, ice cream and trees!

And....
on Wednesday we caught the train to Edinburgh - a first trip to Scotland for Holly and Emma.

I have to say, I really love to visit Edinburgh and travelling by train to get there is a great way to really appreciate the scenery. True to form (for me) it was raining when we arrived - but, as the photograph shows the sun finally shone for us.

Brilliant Day & Fantastic Support

I had a fabulous time on 'my' Plinth and was overwhelmed by the number of flowers I received from generous friends around the world.

You can check out what I did here http://www.oneandother.co.uk/participants/AnneM

Thank you everyone who sent me flowers, messages of support and were watching me (either knitting in the Square or via the live feed).

I, Plinthian

NEWCASTLE KNITTER TAKES HER CRAFT TO NEW HEIGHTS
Jun 21 2009 by Katy Simpson, Sunday Sun (Edited)

A KNITTER from Newcastle will be taking her craft to new heights atop Trafalgar Square’s empty plinth.
Knitting and crochet tutor Anne Makepeace, from Gosforth, has travelled from Scotland to Sussex giving knitting and crochet workshops. But she has never taken her passion anywhere as exciting as the square’s fourth plinth, where she is heading next month as part of Anthony Gormley’s One and Other project. The Angel of the North creator is enabling different people to make the plinth their own, every hour, 24 hours a day, for 100 days without a break. Anne is one of the 2400 people who will climb up to the space normally reserved for Kings and Generals, but which is being handed over instead to people of all walks of life.
The mum-of-two is planning to spend her hour of fame showing people how much fun knitting can be, surrounded by woolly flowers. She is appealing for people to knit or crochet flowers for her to take on to the plinth, which will later be sold to raise funds for two charities. Arthritis Care Newcastle City Branch and RNIB Bexhill on Sea Branch
Anne is the second North East participant to be revealed as taking part in the human artwork project in London. More than 200 people from the region applied to take part. Each of the participants have been chosen at random by computer from thousands of entrants. They are allowed to do anything they want, as long as it is within the law, from entertaining the tourists below to educating people about a message of importance to them. Anne said: "I applied because I thought it was a chance to do something different.
"It’s supposed to be a representation of people all around the UK, so I thought it would be good idea to take my knitting up there, as people often think knitting is just for grannies, and it’s not at all. I will never get an opportunity like that to show off what I can do, and show that knitting is fun. My favourite thing is to knit is socks, but you wouldn’t be able to see what I’m doing, as the plinth is 8 metres high! It’s got to be something big, bold and bright that can be seen from below, so I’m going to do a huge piece of colourful knitting and attach the flowers to that. I’m hoping to get my friends from around the world to make me some flowers to take up there. I’d appreciate any donations from anyone who would like to get involved."
Anne will take up her place on the plinth on Sunday, July 26th from 5.00 to 6.00pm.

Among the tourists in Trafalgar Square, there will also be Anne’s husband Andrew, daughter Sarah, 13, son Euan, 21, and their grandparents. Anne said: "It’s going to be a big family day out, I am hoping some of my knitting friends will be there too. Because of the workshops I do, I’m quite used to knitting or crocheting in front of people. However, doing it in such a public place will be quite a challenge! And, with it being a Sunday in the summer, I suspect it’s not going to be quiet. I am actually quite pleased that somebody from Newcastle got picked because everyone knows the Angel of the North."
Donations of knitted or crocheted flowers should be sent to Anne via her business address at 58 Low Friar Street, Newcastle, NE1 5UE.
If you are part of a knitting group that would like to get involved – it may be an idea to collect all the flowers and send them to me in one batch. Latest date for receipt is Thursday, 23rd July. MailBoxes Etc Newcastle ( http://www.mbenewcastle.co.uk/ ) have kindly agreed to support me by offering to cover the costs of postage for this purpose. Please contact me for further details annemakepeace@btopenworld.com with 4th Plinth in the subject line.
If you are in London on Sunday 26th July I would love it if you could come and support me, shout hello, and knit around the plinth in Trafalgar Square and help prove that Knitting and Crochet is fun, friendly and not all old fashioned!
Patterns for simple flowers, large or small can be found on the following websites :

A Note About the Flowers
Flowers can be any colour, size or shape – this is your chance to go wild!! and help make my knitting noticable. All I ask is that you please leave at least a 3-4 inch tail on each flower. This will make it easier to attach to my knitting – and detach later to be made into flower brooches and corsages for sale. Thank you.

Further Information can be found here -
http://www.oneandother.co.uk/ applications are still being taken!!!
